| The Columbia Kennel
Club offers training classes for the
conformation show ring. Theses classes are not
for obedience. Classes are taught by Club
members who have many years of experience in
showing dogs. Classes are offered twice a
year. The first session is offered beginning
the end of March, and the second session begins
the Thursday after Labor Day. Each session will
last about 8 to 10 weeks. Classes are held at
the Denny Terrace Community Center.

In the Training
Classes, you will learn:
1. how to
properly stack (or set up) your dog.
2. how to use the lead and collar
correctly.
3. the correct speed to move your dog
around the ring.
4. the different patterns used by
judges in a show ring.
5. proper ring procedure.
Things you need know
before coming to class:
- Wear comfortable
clothes and shoes. Jeans and tennis shoes
are fine. Do not wear shoes like
flip-flops, sandals, dress shoes or
open-toed shoes to class. You may be
running around the ring. Appropriate shoes
are necessary for your safety, as well as
your dog’s.
- Know your breed’s
standards. Periodically, we will ask
questions about your breed standard. It is
very important that you know and understand
your breed standard.
your breed’s standards on the American
Kennel Club Website.
Things you need to
bring to class with you:
- A proper show lead
and collar. The type of lead and collar may
vary between different breeds. Consult your
breeder or mentor for the proper one to use.
- A water bowl and
water for your dog. During the break, your
dog may be thirsty.
- Bait for your
dog. Most professionals use boiled and
baked liver. Any type of goodies you can
put in your pocket that your dog likes will
work, too.
- Something to drink
for yourself (non-alcoholic).
- Plastic bags or
scoops, paper towels
Please bring the
following items with you:
- You must have
proof of shots
- Water bowl and
water for your dog.
- Items to clean up
after your dog, such as baggies (or scoops),
paper towels. The Community Center is very
strict about keeping the facility clean,
inside and out. We do not want to loose
this facility because someone did not clean
up after their dog. Also there is a
satellite Sheriff’s Office in the Center.
We especially do not want to make enemies of
them. So, be considerate and clean up after
your dog.
