LEGISLATION TO WATCH
Senate bill S707 – provides for exemption for
dogs used in hunting or in field trials and
clarifies the activities that the law intends to
restrict as it relates to Hog-Dog fighting.

Senate bill S234 – prohibits the denial,
cancellation, or nonrenewal of homeowners
insurance based solely on the presence of one or
more domesticated dogs on the homeowners’
premises, unless there is a documented history
of causing serious damage to personal property
of bodily injury.

Senate bill S1245 – provides that the court may
prohibit harm or harassment to a pet animal
owned, possessed, kept, or held by the
petitioner and to provide that in ordering
temporary possession of personal property, the
court may order the temporary possession of the
pet animal.

House bill H4921 – revises the definition of
“animal” with regard to cruelty to animals to
include all living domestic vertebrate creatures
except homo sapiens.

Senate bill S1260 – provides for the custodian
of an animal taken into custody due to civil or
criminal violations by its owner my petition the
court for expenses relating to providing care to
the animal, to provide for forfeiture of
ownership if the owner fails to make payment for
such care, to provide for disposition of the
animal, and to provide for return of funds when
a person is found not to be in violation.

amended, code of laws of South Carolina, 1976,
relating to the definition of terms used
in the regulation of dangerous
ANIMALS ,
so as to provide that dangerous
ANIMALS
include certain breeds and species including PIT
BULLS, to authorize but not require, county
governing bodies to designate other breeds or
species as dangerous
ANIMALS ;
and to delete the provision that an animal is
not a dangerous animal solely by virtue of it's
breed or species.
